John Bayerl, an enthusiastic promoter of bluegrass and acoustic music was nominated by a band leader who said in part, “…because of his tireless and ceaseless promotion of bluegrass music through his SEMi bluegrass blog. His excellent, well thought out and well written reviews of bluegrass events in the area are a wealth of information for local bluegrass fans.” In addition, John has has been vice president of the Association for much of our short history, and steps up to help with many of our projects.
Unlike most, I found my way into bluegrass later in life. My wife calls it my “mid-life music crisis”. In my mid-40s I happened to take a couple young guys fishing as a favor for a friend. Little did I know that they were the lead singer and banjo player from a U.P. bluegrass band (Chasin’ Steel). When they tipped me with a copy of their CD, I was “hooked”…in fact…I took the long way home from that weekend, stopping by Elderly Instruments in Lansing and buying a guitar and a stack of bluegrass CDs. Flash forward to today and I’m hosting a semi-regular jam at my house with over 50 people on the invite list, attending scores of shows and festivals a year, and documenting all my bluegrass and acoustic music adventures on my blog: SeMiBluegrass.com. I am passionate about what I do and continue to seek ways to promote and grow the live, local, acoustic music scene in Southeast Michigan. I have always said that it’s about “The People, The Places and The Music (always in that order)”. I treasure the many friendships that I have found through music. My “bluegrass family” has enriched my life, and for that I am deeply humbled and thankful.
